The future of casual gamemodes on MineSuperior

    For what feels like an eternity after the post regarding our competitive servers, we're now able to talk about our plans for our casual servers which is basically every server on this network. Casual servers are the heart of MineSuperior and have always been. However recently some people feel we haven't been caring for them and letting them rot.

    This couldn't be more wrong, we have tons of projects in the pipeline for all of our players. But first let me talk about performance issues regarding our casual servers, and why they aren't able to perform as well as our 1.8 servers (Factions for example). Around the time around 1.9 was released, Mojang seemingly changed tactics and focused purely on features and drastic changes without any regard for performance. This has resulted in server performance steadily going down over the years to the point that a vanilla 1.12.2 server has around a quarter the available capacity compared to a vanilla 1.8.9 server. This only gets worse whenever you add in the Craftbukkit API (the API that ALL server plugins use) and all of the addition features our servers have over a vanilla server. All of which means it's incredibly difficult to push past 200 players on a server without performance issues.

    We've made significant progress with optimizing servers on the software side, being able to occasionally achieve 300 players on Survival with 20TPS. However this isn't enough during a pandemic and certainly won't be enough as more and more people build advanced farms. So we're commencing the single most expensive purchase we've ever done in the history of this server by upgrading our entire dedicated server fleet. While we are unable to share the exact specifications of these new servers currently. From our initial testing, we're seeing anywhere from a 15% performance gain (for TNT) to a 100% performance gain (for redstone) with the average performance increase being closer to 100%. The best part is that all servers will eventually receive this hardware upgrade, even servers already running without performance issues currently. Due to supply constraints, only Skyblock Alpha, Towny Exalted, and Survival will be receiving this upgrade immediately with the rest of the network following over the course of the month. We'll be announcing all these hardware upgrades so people can know when they should expect performance improvements.

    Of course that isn't the only thing we're doing to improve capacity, remember I said we had tons of projects in the release pipeline. One of those is the fact we're also adding a second Survival server to the network and limiting the slots on first Survival server to somewhere around 250-300. This means people will be able to enjoy a smooth experience on both servers and we're able to hold more players overall. We'll detail the second Survival server closer to it's launch, though if you want a general time frame it's planned to launch this month currently. The second Survival server is planned to be 1.12.2 due to it's ability to handle players better compared to 1.13 and above.

    That being said we aren't ignoring newer versions all together, we're currently in the process of testing 1.15.2 extensively to release a Survival type server (We haven't decided on Towny or Survival style yet, though it'll probably be a vote to the players) for everyone to enjoy. The goal of said server is to allow us to quickly update to 1.16 so people can enjoy the upcoming nether update immediately. We hope to detail this in the coming weeks as we finish our 1.15.2 testing.

    Alongside our 1.15.2 testing, we're also planning to add a Parkour server to the network by late summer to give our players more gamemodes to choose from. We feel it's a perfect fit for our network because while it is enraging, nothing beats the satisfaction of beating a hard parkour map. It also helps that most of management has been wanting a parkour server for many months so it'll done relatively quickly compared to our more intensive projects such as 1.15.2 testing.

    Finally I'd like to recap that the casual servers are hardly effected by the new Mojang Commerical Usage Guidelines. They specifically allow us to sell powerful items as long as they aren't used in a competitive matter (Say rewarding players for being the #1 Island/Faction). The only changes you should expect are to PVP arenas to ensure that everyone there is on even footing. This was going to happen anyway so these new guidelines are only accelerating our timeline on this.

    With everything said, I'd like to remind everyone that we truthfully care about our community. Everytime a server crashes and everytime there's a massive riot in the server we take it seriously to ensure it's resolved as soon as possible. While it may not be obvious, we lose sleep over this server, we work all nighters, and we all work 24/7 to ensure everyone has the best possible server. This community means the world to us and we'll do our best to ensure that our community has the best possible server for them. It may be a pandemic but we'll get through this together.

    TL : DR - We're upgrading our server's hardware across the board so expect some pretty high performance improvements, we're also releasing a second survival server, finishing up testing 1.15.2 at the same time, and we're also working on a parkour server.

    OH! If yall do parkour maps maybe we can have community submitted parkours? like in creative people can build em and judges think is good add to the community section of parkour maps playable or official.

    A competition for a new interactive hub PLEASE it would be SUCH a huge add where people can come and interact and have a good time. A more enjoyful experience before they join a server. cause rn the hub is just plain and boring.
